  Ausmelt Tin Technology

Ausmelt Tin Technology is used to produce high quality crude tin directly from concentrates and secondary materials, suitable for conventional refining. Tin is also recoverable as a rich fume containing 60 to 75% Sn from the fuming of tin slags and other low-grade tin sources.

Two major commercial smelters currently operate Ausmelt Tin Technology. The Ausmelt tin smelter installed by Minsur in Peru has been in operation since 1996 and produces over 35,000 tonnes of high-grade crude tin for refining, almost double the design throughput. The second tin smelter, at Yunnan Tin, was commissioned in 2002 and produces approximately 25,000 tonnes of crude tin.

Tin Concentrate Smelting

    Slag Fuming

Low to high grade concentrates (40 to 80% tin) are readily processed by the Ausmelt tin smelting system for direct production of crude tin metal. The Ausmelt tin smelting process is usually confined to a single Ausmelt vessel that operates cyclically, incorporating three stages: smelting, slag reduction and slag fuming.
