The AusIron® process for direct ironmaking is based on Ausmelt’s commercially successful Top Submerged Lance technology.

Ausmelt has applied this technology in plants around the world, processing a variety of metals such as lead, tin, zinc, copper, nickel, gold/silver and PGM’s. The technology has also been used to treat hazardous waste products such as spent pot lining from the aluminium industry.

The AusIron® technology builds on this success, with the process capabilities already proven at the purpose-built Demonstration Plant in Whyalla, South Australia.

APPLICATIONS

  • Incremental hot metal supply for integrated steel producers
  • Hot metal supply to EAF operations
  • Pig iron production from currently un-usable ferrous feeds

ADVANTAGES

  • No Sintering or Pelletising
  • Direct Use of Themal Coals
  • Low Capital Cost
  • Simple, Low Pressure Operation
  • Environmentall Robust
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
AUSIRON PIG IRON DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Continuing work to establish funding support

AUSIRON DEMONSTRATION PLANT PROJECT
Ausmelt is pursuing a project to establish commercial operations using its Whyalla demonstration plant.  The plant will be reconfigured to a non-ferrous application, proven in commercial use elsewhere.  Once established the project offers consistent revenues from primary and secondary processing operations

CHINA STEEL INDUSTRY
A chinese steelmaker is currently undertaking a feasibility study based on a 500ktpa AusIron Module

INDIA STEEL INDUSTRY
AusIron has submitted a proposal for pig iron production using mining tailings
